How We Evaluate and Compare Mattresses

To keep our evaluations strictly objective, we measure all models against five primary sleep performance pillars. Here is how we score each mattress to help you decide:

1. Spine Alignment & Support

A great mattress must keep your spine in a neutral line, whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach. We use pressure-mapping sensors on sleepers of different body sizes to check if the pelvis sinks too deep or stays aligned with the shoulders.

2. Temperature Regulation

Sleeping hot is one of the most common causes of sleep disruption. We place thermal sensors on the mattress cover and measure heat retention over a 60-minute cycle. Air-flow heavy models like the Purple Grid score significantly higher than dense memory foam models.

3. Motion Transfer & Co-Sleeping

If you share a bed, you do not want to feel your partner tossing and turning. We drop a 15-pound steel ball on one side of the bed and measure the movement waves on the other side using highly sensitive accelerometers.
