A king mattress is 76" × 80" — 16 inches wider than a queen. That extra space changes what matters. Edge support becomes critical (more surface means more edge-sleeping). Motion isolation matters more when two people have more room to move independently. And at king pricing, durability is a bigger investment to protect.
I've tested 12 king-size mattresses over the past year. These are the ones that earned a recommendation — ranked by category, not paid placement. If you're still deciding between king and queen, the mattress sizes guide breaks down the dimensions and room requirements. For overall rankings across all sizes, see the best mattress of 2026.

What Changes at King Size
Three things matter more in a king than in a queen or full:
- Edge support. With 76 inches of width, you're more likely to sleep near the edge. Beds without reinforced perimeters lose 6–8 inches of usable surface on each side. The Saatva and WinkBed both have foam-encased perimeters I tested by sitting and lying near the edge — both held firm. The Nectar's all-foam construction shows more compression at the edge under body weight.
- Motion isolation. More sleeping surface means more independent movement. Memory foam (Nectar) absorbs the most motion. Hybrids (Saatva, Helix, WinkBed) transfer slightly more but offer better responsiveness for people who change positions.
- Price per square inch. King mattresses typically cost 20–30% more than queens. At that price tier, foam density and coil count matter more — a low-density foam king will show body impressions sooner, which is a bigger loss at king pricing.
1. Saatva Classic — Best King Overall
The Saatva Classic is the best king size mattress I've tested for most sleepers. The coil-on-coil construction (tempered steel base coils + individually wrapped comfort coils) gives it exceptional lumbar support and edge stability. The Euro pillow top adds surface comfort without the deep sinkage of all-foam beds. White glove delivery is included — important at king size, which weighs 80–100 lbs and is genuinely difficult to maneuver up stairs.
Available in three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm) and two heights (11.5" and 14.5"). The 14.5" version is worth the slight upcharge — deeper coil stack, more support.
2. Helix Midnight — Best King for Side Sleepers
The Helix Midnight's zoned coil system places softer foam under the shoulders and firmer support under the hips — a design that works particularly well for side sleepers who share a king. I tested it with two people of different weights (142 lbs and 198 lbs) and both reported good shoulder decompression. The DreamKnit cover breathes well. Motion isolation is above average for a hybrid at this price.
3. Nectar Original — Best Value King
At under $900 for a king, Nectar is the best value in this size. The gel memory foam contours well, the motion isolation is excellent (minimal transfer in testing), and the 365-night trial is the longest of any mainstream brand. The trade-off: no edge reinforcement, and the all-foam construction traps slightly more heat than hybrid alternatives. Still the right buy if budget is the primary constraint.
4. WinkBed — Best King Edge Support
WinkBed's reinforced foam perimeter is the best edge support system I've tested at this price tier. At 6 inches from the edge with full body weight, compression was under 0.5 inches — essentially no usable surface lost to edge softness. The 7-zone lumbar coil grid also provides excellent back support. The lifetime warranty is a meaningful differentiator for a king-size investment.
What to Look for in a King Mattress
Edge Support
Test this in-store by sitting on the edge and lying with your shoulder near the perimeter. If you sink more than an inch, that's usable surface you're losing every night. Look for foam-encased or steel-reinforced perimeters in any king hybrid you're considering.
Weight Capacity
Most standard king mattresses support 500–700 lbs combined. If total sleeper weight exceeds 400 lbs, look specifically at models rated for heavier use — the best mattresses for heavy people guide covers this in detail.
Delivery and Setup
A king mattress weighs 80–130 lbs. Compressed foam-in-a-box kings are manageable with two people. Innerspring and hybrid kings at this weight genuinely require white glove delivery — Saatva includes it free. Factor setup logistics into your decision before ordering.
Firmness for Couples
If two people with different preferences share the king, consider a split king (two XL twins on an adjustable base) or choose a medium firmness that works for both. The mattress buying guide has a firmness selector tool.
Quick Questions
Is a king worth the upgrade from queen? If you share the bed and either person moves a lot, or if one person is over 6'2", yes. The 16 extra inches of width makes a measurable difference in co-sleeping quality.
What's the difference between King and Cal King? Standard king is 76"×80". California king is 72"×84" — narrower but 4 inches longer. Only worth it if someone is above 6'4". See the King vs Cal King comparison for full details.
How much should a good king mattress cost? Budget: $500–$900 (Nectar, Zinus). Mid-range: $900–$1,600 (Helix, DreamCloud). Premium: $1,600–$2,500 (Saatva, WinkBed, Avocado). Above $2,500 you're primarily paying for brand prestige.
